Admin = Adulting
My definition for admin - Stuff that is painfully boring to do, but important. Including but not limited to:
- Doing your taxes
- Renewing your passport
- Having enough money in your bank account for this month's rent
- Cancelling a free trial before it charges you for the month
- Remembering to pay off this month's credit card bill
- Having enough clean clothes to wear for the week
- Changing your bedsheets once a week yes, once a week
Admin is a very very icky thing.
Nobody aspires to fill their day with admin. Like if I told you my goal in life was to fold my clothes and do my taxes all day, you'd probably think I was crazy.
The thing with admin is that we can't NOT do it, because there'll undoubtedly be consequences. For example, if you choose to ignore renewing your passport, you may end up almost getting deported because the visa office needs an active passport to let you stay in their country (true story).
As kids, our parents did everything for us. They made sure we had food for the day, paid our school fees, and made sure we had enough clean clothes free of holes. We never had to worry about the boring admin stuff.
But now that we're older, we don't have our parents to rely on to do that stuff anymore. We have to do it ourselves.
Most people will read that and sigh, wishing that admin didn't exist, or wishing they had someone to do it for them. But I see admin as an opportunity. Doing admin is a fantastic way to prove to ourselves every day that we are in fact, adults.
So every time I fold my clothes or renew my passport, I feel confident in calling myself an adult because I'm physically doing something that an adult would do.
I don't know - maybe today's blog is just a way to trick myself into getting admin done even though I hate it. Who knows.
