Good writing

Writing well is probably one of the most difficult and frustrating things anyone can do to themselves (not saying I'm a good writer - I have a lot to learn).

Putting words on the page isn't the hard pat - I'll write and write and write for 60 minutes with no problems. But then when I read back on my writing, I think to myself, "what the hell am I even writing, and why would anyone read this?"

That stage of the writing process is pretty annoying. So when that happens, I find it really helpful to ask myself, "If I had a microphone that could speak to everyone to the world, what would I say?"

I like this question because it forces me to condense everything I want to say in as few words as possible. It helps me focus my point and cut through all the unnecessary waffle.

I don't know about you, but I'd feel pretty dumb for wasting even 1 second of 8 billion people's time by waffling (I was going to say 7 billion but it's now 8 - when did that happen?!)
