sweat the small stuff
I moved into a new flat last week, and naturally, I've been tidying and deciding where to put things.
I thought I could take my time with this - slowly getting 'settled in' over the course of a month or two while I figure out the more important aspects of my life. But I've been noticing that not having my flat in neat order has been unconsciously stressing me the hell out, especially in the morning.
The moment I open my eyes in the morning, I see the stuff on the floor that I need to deal with: the unhung poster propped up by the wall, the boxes of cables that I hardly use, and the pile of laundry I need to fold but have been too lazy to deal with, just to name a few.
These things may seem like trivial matters, but regardless, it's still affecting my stress and mental well-being.
I've always felt guilty for sweating the small stuff like this. I envied the people that had messy rooms and could still perform well at school and work. I thought "those bastards don't know what it's like to be wired this way".
And while that may be true, I don't see any other option than to accept this part of myself and move on. The other option (which is not really an option) is to constantly beat myself up for sweating the small stuff. It's hard work to beat myself up, so I might as well redirect that energy to tidy and clean up, right?
