"The grass is greener when you water it"

I heard this in a Tom Misch song yesterday

I tend to daydream a lot about my dream life. About what my life isn't, but could be like in the future. "What if I got a job in finance? How cool would it be if I became an actor? I'm really good at talking to people - what if I became a talk show host? Man, the flat is too small for 2 people - I wish I lived alone."

I think this daydreaming is just a coping mechanism for when I'm unhappy with my life. It's easy to blame everything and everyone for my crappy situation, whether that be in a relationship, work, or my mental health.

But hearing this quote made me realise that I actually have the power to change things. Even though the situation I'm in is less than ideal, if I 'water it' by giving my 100%, the situation will probably improve in some way.

It's an empowering idea. Instead of running away when things aren't going my way, I can focus on what I can control.

If things work out, then that's fantastic. But if they don't, then all I've lost is the time and energy spent trying to make it work - and in my eyes, that's not a waste at all. It's actually a great tactic to die without regret.
